This site is my review of Google’s Chromecast HDMI Streaming Media Player.  I’ve spent some time researching this device  to learn what I can do with Google Chromecast and if it will be easy and useful.  I have learned this is a pretty impressive device which can be a great addition your home entertainment system and offers several advantages that overcome common issues in today’s media dense world.I am posting this review here so you can learn more before purchasing a Chromecast Device.  If you are already informed and ready to purchase a Chromecast, click one of the links in this article to buy a Google Chromecast Device.

Since Google Chromecast was introduced it has been flying off the shelves.  This amazing little device has been hard to keep in stock at many retailers and many retailers have not carried them, the good new is they are also available online and the price about the same no matter where you get it.

What is Google Chromecast Streaming Media Player

Google’s Chromecast streaming media player is probably one of the most convenient ways to stream digital media from the web to your HDMI television.  The device plugs into the HDMI input of your television or receiver.   Multiple users can cast and queue programs to it once they are connected to it through your wireless network.  Although Chromecast streams audio and video to your television, it is streaming it from the cloud, not your computer or device.  Your computer, tablet or phone is just acting as a remote control.  There are two great advantages to streaming through the internet, they are:

  1. The device is not draining lots of power from your device.
  2. You can still use your device to do other things while Chromecast is streaming your content.

Device Availability

Chromecast’s novelty and popularity have created difficulties for retailers to keep them in stock, however you can find Chromecast at Amazon and other online retailers often with free shipping.  Some people who ordered Chromecasts when they were initially released were told they may have to wait up to three months to receive it – Amazon and Best Buy were often out of stock.  Months later during Black Friday 2013 stores such as Best Buy were running out of them.  Thankfully those problems seem to be passed and you can find them easier now.

How Much Does a Chromecast Cost?

The device retails for about $35, you may occasionally find special deals with a lower price, but I have only seen a few sales off of what is already a good price.  This price also is much better than similar devices such as Roku or Apple TV.  This low priced option also boasts an expanding list of supporting services and an easy setup method.

Amazon shows the items most often purchased with the Chromecast dongle are a six inch micro USB to Standard USB data/charger cable and a 6.5 foot high speed HDMI cable.  Look to the sidebar on the right for links to these items if you need them.

What Operating Systems and Services does Google Chromecast Support

As of this writing, Chromecast supports these services:

  • Youtube
  • Netflix
  • Hulu
  • Pandora
  • Google Play
  • Chrome browser tabs when using the Chromecast browser extension.

New supported services should be added as more compatible apps become available and as the HDMI device matures.  The Chromecast adapter automatically updates, so the addition of new features will not require the user to update their Chromecast device.

Google Chromecast works with Android, iOS with supporting apps and with Windows and Mac with the Chrome browser and Chromecast extension.

What Comes with a Google Chromecast

When you get your Google Chromecast player, the box will include the following:

  • Chromecast HDMI streaming media player
  • USB cable
  • HDMI extender
  • Power Adapter
  • Product Information/Setup Instructions

The HDMI extender is for televisions or other audiovisual equipment having their HDMI ports in tight places. The Chromecast device requires external power which can be supplied either through the USB cable or the included power adapter.

How Easy is it to Install and Use Google Chromecast?

Installing a Chromecast device is pretty easy to do.  To setup your Chromecast dongle, place it in the HDMI port of your television or receiver.  If there are space limitations, use the included HDMI extender.  You can plug the USB cable into the dongle and then plug the other end of the USB cable into a USB port or into the included power adapter.  There is no need to connect your computer to your television HDMI port or run cable to put your television on your network.  Once the device is powered, set your television to HDMI input and you should see the Chromecast welcome screen and and it will help you connect to your wireless network.

You will also need to install the Chromecast extension into your Google Chrome browser, or download the Chromecast app to your smartphone or tablet.

Once everything is setup, you can use the cast button on the screen of supported apps and Google Chrome to send programs to your television – there is no much need to watch great internet videos and movies on tiny screens when you have one of these gadgets around.

So, Should You Buy a Google Chromecast?

After extensively researching Google’s Chromecast HDMI Streaming Media Player I’ve realized this is a very useful and entertaining device and a great addition to any home entertainment system.  It is also very easy to setup and to use.

If you have an HDMI capable television or receiver and frequently use the computer or are huddled around a smart phone to watch videos on Youtube, this may be the device for you.  If you get one of these devices, sharing content with family and friends will no longer be a struggle with everyone trying to get a look at the same tiny screen.

I have found this Google Chromecast to be affordable, easy to setup and use, and a great advantage when with family and friends.  Click the link below to buy your own Chromecast device and have it shipped to you.

Chromecast is probably the least expensive and quickest way to use the internet on your TV.   At only 35 dollars it is an easy buy for even the most cost sensitive channel and web surfers.  This digital media streaming adapter will use your existing wireless connection and HDMI television.  After connecting it to your HDMI capable television and connecting it to your wireless network, you control it with your smartphone, tablet or computer.

There is no need for expensive audio visual equipment such as receivers or additional digital media players, no additional monthly fees or services are required.  Your device whether it is a tablet, smartphone or computer ends up acting like a remote – allowing you to queue up your own programming from the web.  If you have multiple Chromecasts, each of them can queue up video to the same television.  Chromecast also does not require that your device play the content you send to your television – While watching videos with Chromecast, you can still use your device for other things or even turn it off.

You can also use it to watch Google Play, Hulu, Netflix if you have access to these services and anything that is available through the web using the Chrome browser.  Support for additional services is will be added in the future.

Using Google’ Chromecast dongle is easy.  With the Chromecast adapter plugged into your HDMI device, install the Chrome web browser and the free Google Cast browser extension onto your computer, then you will be able to send anything you are viewing in your browser up to your TV.  To use Chromecast from your smartphone or tablet to control your tv, you need to install the free Chromecast app from the Play Store. No remote is required to use Google Chromecast, just your HDMI capable tv, a computer, tablet or phone and the Chromecast device.

Probably the hardest thing about Google’s Chromecast if getting one.  It is a hot selling item in 2013 and many stores often do not have them in stock.  But you can find great deals on the internet, sometimes without shipping charges.
